CHRIS ST
JOHN

Chris started writing songs at 7, picking up his first guitar at 14.  He has been writing songs, singing, and playing ever since.  Initially self-taught on the guitar, Chris won musical contest after contest in college with his velvety voice.

Chris wrote dozens of soaring melodic songs over the last 40 years, crafting a knack for diverse and thought-provoking lyrics.  “During that time, I mostly wrote for myself, playing my songs alone at the top of a dune, or at home for family and friends.  So many encouraged me to pursue a musical career, but the timing didn’t seem right.  Last year I professionally produced my first song, “I Need a Horse”, about a horse I rode on an authentic cattle roundup in Wyoming.  I decided to finally live my dreams and pursue a musical career.  I also purchased the horse”, he added.

Music has always been Chris’ true passion. The foundation for his musical tastes were initially developed during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  “The Beatles were my first love at 5, and at 15 I discovered the Grateful Dead. In between, I listened to a steady diet of Jackson Brown, the Eagles, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, James Taylor, Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac and other similar soft rock, rock, folk, and Americana music.  Thereafter he became captured by old country music, Motown, doo wop and Songs from the Great American Songbook.  These influences made Chris’ songwriting unique and authentic.  “I learned a lot of jazz chords, which dramatically expanded my capabilities. When writing, I don’t follow the so-called rules.  I play what I hear, follow my instincts, and do it for the joy of it. I think when you write for yourself, the world wants to listen to what you have to say. I didn’t set out to write a hit song with a cookie cutter approach. I think the hits came because I was writing, playing, and singing to celebrate my joys and release my sorrows. The one thing about my evolution as a songwriter that I’m pleased with, is that I’ve become comfortable enough to write a song on the spot about almost anything.  I don’t have to wait around for inspiration to strike.”

Chris’s first album, I’m Dreaming, won critical acclaim, and has had several top-ten Indie chart toppers, including “I Called you Rose”, which climbed all the way to No. 3 on the Worldwide Indie Charts.

Chris recently travelled to Nashville to work with legendary producer Stephen Wrench to record his upcoming album, Fly Away. During the production of the album, Chris worked with some of the finest musicians in the world, including drummer Wayne Killius, guitarists Carl Miner and James Mitchell, bassist Alison Prestwood, keyboard player Mike Rojas and string master Jonathan Yudkin. Prior to recording, all artists were provided Nashville charts and demos of Chris’ songs. “I led them through a few of the chord progressions. Otherwise, they were given artistic license and freedom to create and improvise. That’s not the norm in the industry, but it opens the door for musicians to play for the love of it. As a result, there was palpable magic in the air during the sessions. I think it will be obvious to the listener that we were having so much fun. Playing and singing with this group was one of the highlights of my life,” he added.

The first single “Hey Siri”, climbed the charts quickly and hit No. 1 on the Worldwide and European charts within 3 weeks, remaining at the top for 5 weeks. The album, set for early release in 2022, entitled Fly Away, is set to soar. Chris also took a lead in artist development, discovering the uber-talented vocalist, Leah Haley. “She was singing in live sessions for on a project for I’m Dreaming. There were several background vocalists, but I could hear Leah’s voice in the mix. There was a distinct vulnerability and sweetness to what she was doing. Her vocals and mine worked well together, and I could hear her natural abilities. We rehearsed and I chose her to sing on the album. In addition to writing and playing my own songs, I want to help other artists follow their dreams.”
